The body relies on the heart to pump oxygenated blood to the organs. Even the heart requires oxygenated blood and that is delivered via the coronary arteries. A coronary intervention is a procedure used to treat narrowing or blockages in a coronary artery (commonly called a ‘heart attack’). It involves opening narrowed or blocked sections of the artery, enabling the restoration of blood flow to the heart. Ischaemic heart disease is the number one cause of death worldwide and that is why plenty of research has focused on this field. A structural intervention is a procedure used to treat narrowed or leaky heart valves or close holes in the heart in a minimally invasive manner (not requiring open heart surgery). Interventional Cardiologists are the subspecialists who perform these highly skilled procedures.
Our research interests include studying the effects and patient outcomes of procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and interventions on diseases of the mitral valve of the heart.
