Alan's story

A significant part of my career has focused on innovation and I have been engaged in a variety of research projects over the last 45 years. These projects have been national and international, mainly related to transport.

The opportunity to be engaged in health-related research came as an outcome of my treatment for prostate cancer and an introduction to the Patient and Public Research Advisory Group (PPRAG) by a Senior Research Radiologist at UHCW.

My wife also worked at UHCW for 35 years in a variety of roles and has been treated as a patient at UHCW, and our son was also born there. My reasons for involvement as a Research Champion are various, but include paying back the great treatment and kindness of UHCW staff, and an interest in finding out more about medical research.

I have been able to get involved in various research opportunities from a patient and public perspective, including working with the Arden Tissue Bank; being a member of the Patient and Public Research Advisory Group (PPRAG) and more recently as a member of the Research Strategy and Steering Group. My involvement with these groups allows me to review early-stage research proposals and become involved in research projects as a co-applicant prior to the projects being submitted to various funding bodies, which will involve working with our two local universities and UHCW. I am finding the involvement in health-related research and working with bright, motivated people really interesting and would encourage anybody with the time and interest to get involved. Look forward to meeting you.
